Memoirs of a Scammer

This began when a friend spotted an offer on a Facebook job board. They asked me if it was fake. It looked pretty dodgy to me, and I hadn’t had some fun in a while. Without further ado, let me introduce you to Paul Manwookie.

Subject: Admin position advertised on Jobs for the Tribe

May 23, 2015 at 8:51 AM

Hi Martha,

I was referred to send you my resume for the admin position. My resume is attached.

Cheers,

Paul

Attachment: Random CV from the internet

May 23, 2015 at 9:16 AM

Dear Paul,

Thank you for the interest showing on the office/admin job posted on facebook.I am sorry for my late reply owing to my busy schedule plus my dad is sick with stroke here in England which is one of the main reason I need a new assistant as my previous assistant went back to Philippine.I am from Sydney but my office is in Brisbane,Queensland.I am looking for a personal assistant with high pedigree who can do a full-time or part-time work on a daily and weekly basis. After going through your resume,i am somewhat convinced that you are the right applicant for this position.

I work with A non-governmental organization (NGO) which is an organization that is neither a part of a government nor a conventional for-profit business and are run primarily by volunteers.

This position are mostly base on errands to care for the children needs in terms of their education, food, clothes and shelters most especially the orphanage.

For now, your main assignment is payroll, errands and keeping of the records of the work done on a weekly and monthly basis. You will be buying and sending some list of items to these children when needed and also sending of funds when needed in order to meet their various needs

I will give you list of items to scout out for in various stores which might include shoes, clothes, guitar, computer, books and some other items I will list for you in different sizes and quantities after our agreement is made.

You will be working 5 days/week and 4 hours everyday at your convenient time but starting from morning of course.I will offer you $25/hour and $100/day which means your weekly salary is $500/week.

If you think you understand what this job is all about and you are ready for the task,do get back to me and don't hesitate to ask any question. This is a non office work at the moment but it has to do with calculation, finance and keeping of records.

Greetings,

Martha.

May 23, 2015 at 9:42 AM

Thanks Martha,

That sounds great! How do we get started?

May 23, 2015 at 10:00 AM

Dear Paul,

To answer your questions;Firstly, the orphanage could be at random. What i mean by random is we focused on where they call us for support which could be anywhere around the globe, but we mostly focus on Europe,Oceania,Africa,America and Asian. Those are the 5 continents we majorly focusing on as we do have sponsors as well.

You will be working at home for now as we don't have too many branches at the moment but we are working hard day by day to expand in order to reach out to the world.

I will like your first assignment to start on Monday and it all depends on your availability either for a short or long term.

I have considered you for this position as i have been turning down some other applicants because you have a very good experience in this position and your resume shows how active and smart you are.

Like i told you earlier,i don't have specific NGO i work for,our sponsors give us go ahead where our help is needed but i have worked with different NGO which includes; Heifer International-United States,Handicap International-France,Root Capital-United States and BRAC-Bangladesh which makes me the representative of them all from various sponsors. I hope you do understand my point

Let me know if you are still interested or i should consider the rest applicant.

I hope to hearing back from you soon.

Regards,

Martha

I like to lay the groundwork for ridiculousness early.

May 23, 2015 at 10:16 AM

Hi Martha,

Thank you for your prompt reply. Working from home sounds like the perfect job, as I have 3 boys that I adopted from a similar orphanage to the ones you describe. Because of this, I am available both short and long term, and can start as soon as Monday. If the job goes well, I'd like to adopt another boy or girl because I am a benevolent man.

One quick question. You mention 5 continents that you currently service. I live in Australia, and just wondering why you don't service Australia or Antarctica? Or if you plan on doing so in the future, because I believe I could help you expand into those markets.

Gratefully Yours,

Paul

May 23, 2015 at 10:42 AM

The methodology of this scam was new to me.

May 23, 2015 at 11:20 AM

Hi Martha,

Great timing! My local shopping center is open on Saturdays, and as I had a free morning, I was able to visit a few places.

I was able to source prices for most items from Toys 'R' Us. They were really helpful and they said that because I was working for a charity, they could order in some of the ones they didn't have in stock and also give me a discount!

There was also a couple things they can no longer get in stock.

I am able to get the Camelio Android Tablet by Vivitar from The Good Guys tho.

Total time spent today:

Travel: 45 minutes

Sourcing Prices: 2 hours (I visited a few stores before Toys R Us)

Attachment: Spreadsheet of random prices

May 23, 2015 at 6:41 PM

Dear Paul,

Thank you for getting back to me.I couldn't believe you could came up with these prices in short period of time. I couldn't wish for more Personal Assistant. I am heading to the hospital now where my dad is but i will get back to you with further details in the morning your time.

Cheers,

Marth

Is Martha becoming suspicious of Paul so soon? Time to dial back his response time? Nahh.

May 23, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Thanks Martha,

I will do my best to make sure that you've chosen the right person for the job!

I look forward to your response.

Paul

May 25, 2015 at 6:10 AM

Good morning Paul,

How was your night? Thank you for your kind response. I am more than happy to have you as my Personal Assistant because in you I have found a hard working, kind, friendly and sincere. Like I said earlier,I couldn't wished for more in a P.A.

I will be paying your weekly salary through your bank account and also the money to use as payroll, buying of the items will be sent to the same account whereby you can easily have an access to do whatever needed to be done without any delay.

You may open a new account whereby it will have an online access where we can both monitor incoming and outgoing funds in the account if you don't wish to use your main bank account of course.

That's the next step!

Cheers,

Martha

And so we begin. Was quite a few emails before the bank details request came up.

Set up Paul’s delay excuses often and early.

May 25, 2015 at 6:10 AM

Hi Martha,

I have to head into town this morning, so I'll drop by the bank and see if anything can be done today. You know how slow banks are!

I'll let you know how I go.

Cheers,

Paul

May 25, 2015 at 6:21 AM

Hi Paul,

Okay, I will be waiting to hear back from you soon.

Cheers,

Martha

Time to turn this around. Also, set email to send after banks are actually open. Just in case they have a clue. Add in a dash of desperation and set up some excuses for later, and we’re good to go.

Subject: New Bank Account - User Details

May 25, 2015 at 10:18 AM

Hi Martha,

Just so you know, my weekend was quite traumatic, we lost one of our dogs in a car accident, so I got no sleep and now I'm up for thousands of dollars in vet bills :(

The boys and I are very sad, but at the same time, I am more motivated than ever for you, as I'm going to need this job to pay the vet.

Anyway, I have spoken to my mate Floyd at my local bank, and he said he'd be happy to help out.

I have a bank account that I don't really use anymore that he said would be perfect for the purposes of this job. He'll get me a good interest rate, and remove some limits normally on account transactions. Not sure what that is all about, but cool!

To add you to my account so you can access it online, the bank will require the following details from you.

Full Name:

D.O.B.:

Company Name: (If operating business from account)

Company Address: (If operating within Australia)

Phone Number:

Address:

Photo ID: (Scanned and signed is OK)

Cheers,

Paul

May 25, 2015 at 11:03 AM

Dear Paul,

I am so sorry you lost your dog and your week is traumatic. I hope you get over him/her pretty soon. It's late here in England and I will be going to the bed very soon.

To answer your questions; I never said you should open a joint account. That Is your own duty to do as a personal assistant and it sounds weird to add me to your account before I can see what Is going on with every transaction, but if that isn't cool by you,you may hold unto your online login.

I have explained to you the different NGOs I work with which makes me their representatives around the globe but I can provide you with their addresses if that is what you want.

Just so you know I am in England at the moment but I can also give you my address and phone number.

Lastly,if you have a Skype account we can video chat sometimes and you can have an ideal of whom your boss is.

Goodnight,

Martha

Really? People talk to these scammers? Gonna have to come up with some good excuses for those.

May 25, 2015 at 11:46 AM

Hi Martha,

I'm not opening a joint account, I have just requested an additional user for the account. This is how you access all the online facilities so you can monitor all bank activity.

The bank doesn't require the addresses of the NGO's as they will simply be payees. They only require your details, as you will need access to the account.

Please send me the details in the morning so I can pass them on to Floyd and get you setup as quickly as possible.

I have tried Skype a few times in the past, and all it did was crash my computer. I yelled at it a lot before smashing my webcam and deleting it.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Paul

May 26, 2015 at 9:33 AM

Dear Paul,

I am sorry for my late reply I have been busy.

My full name: Martha Cochran

D.O.B: 08/10/1980

Address: 22,Beaconsfield Road,Leyton,London,E10 5RD England.

martha.cochran1985 is my Skye account name.

Cheers,

Martha.

Thanks Martha, we now have more fake info about you than you do about Paul. We should fix that. I hope it wasted a little of your time.

May 26, 2015 at 10:46 AM

Hi Martha,

Thanks for the info, but the bank will still need a phone number and a scanned signed copy of your photo ID.

I would love to get this happening as quickly as possible. If you don't have a scanner/photocopier, a good digital photo of ID works wonders, I've done it myself plenty of times!

Cheers,

Paul

May 26, 2015 at 5:11 PM

Dear Paul,

This is a short note to let you know if you cannot operate without me have something to do with your bank you may forget the job.

Enjoy your evening!

Martha

Oh no! Have we lost Martha so soon? Say it ain’t so.

Could it all have been a misunderstanding?

May 26, 2015 at 8:31 PM

Hi Martha,

That's great news! I am happy to operate with you having no access to my bank account. That should make it quicker to get things up and running.

I have been doing my best to get you access to my bank account because you seem like an honest woman willing to help out the less fortunate. But if you believe we can continue without the need for you to monitor everything, I am happy to oblige.

Just let me know what you need me to do next!

Cheers,

Paul

We have lost salutation privileges. Dark times are afoot.

May 26, 2015 at 9:23 PM

It's your job I believe you are an active man who knows what's he's doing and will always do the right thing at the right time.

Though the amount might not be sent to your bank account at once,we can start things slowly and get to the top gradually to achieve our goals.

Just send your account details with bank address and your address as well.

I hope your boys are doing great.

Martha.

Time to give Martha a carrot. Here, have some fake info to balance the scales.

May 26, 2015 at 10:35 PM

Hi Martha,

The account details are:

BSB: 034 002

Account: 32 8742

My Address is: 55 Days Rd, Wights Mountain, Queensland

I'm happy to start slowly, I believe we can achieve grand things together quickly. Like the lioness and the mousette.

Cheers,

Paul

May 26, 2015 at 10:39 PM

What is the name of your bank and what is their address?

First we lost the salutation, now we lose the sign off. Do I detect a hint of annoyance in your correspondence?

Before we even have a chance to reply, our friend has upped the ante.

May 26, 2015 at 10:40 PM

Here I have a photo of me attached.I hope you like it

Hello Martha, let’s see what a reverse image search tells us about you. Quite a few results, you’re a popular young lass. You appear to have a number of different names, and are quite active on social media, a russian marriage scam website, several other scam alert websites and a few dating sites. Perhaps this one will be interested in more than just Paul’s bank account opening skills.

May 26, 2015 at 10:53 PM

Oh wow, you look exactly like this Russian girl I met on the internet a little while ago. We were going to get married, but for some reason, she disappeared :(

My wife at the time was looking forward to having a Russian sister-wife. They were going to take it in turns watching their favourite TV shows while the other wife looked after the boys.

We mourned her loss for many weeks, and hoped that nothing bad came of it. We had just sent her money to fly out to Australia. The final word in the final sentence she ever uttered to us was love.

I didn’t want to make it look too obvious that Paul was on to their little game, so I went the subtle path and didn’t include a salutation or sign-off.

May 26, 2015 at 10:56 PM

I am sorry to hear about that.Well, unfortunately I am not her and she's not me lol. Thank you for the compliment though I hope she find her way back to you someday.

I need the bank name and address.

Phew, thanks for the reassurance. Back to business.

May 26, 2015 at 11:00 PM

Thank you for your kind words, Martha.

Which bank address do you need? I don't always use the same bank. It just depends on where I am, and which one is closest.

I'll get on to it in the morning. For now I have to go to bed. Goodnight.

May 26, 2015 at 11:02 PM

The bank name and addresss of

BSB: 034 002

Account: 32 8742

Okay,Goodnight and sweet dreams

Sign-off privileges are back and Martha appears to have taken the bait, bring on the sweet sweet romance!

Add a dash of ineptitude and condescension to the casserole. Stir.

May 27, 2015 at 7:22 AM

Hi Martha,

The bank name is Westpac.

I'm afraid I still don't understand what you mean by address of the bank? Westpac has branches all over the country, and indeed the world. Their head office is in Sydney, but a quick Google search would show you that.

http://www.westpac.com.au/about-westpac/global-locations/westpac-australia/

You live in London, surely you know what a multinational bank is? Unless they have removed them all since the last time I visited.

Cheers,

Paul

May 27, 2015 at 7:28 AM

Good morning Paul,

How was your night? I am still up watching a movie and also doing some paper work. I understand what you meant but i was only asking if you have a specific branch where you opened your account.I wouldn't mind if you send me a photo of yourself to have an idea of how you look like.

How old are you if you do not mind me asking?

Cheers,

Mathar

All privileges restored. I feel something biting on the hook of romance. Now, who is Paul Manwookie? Time to take things slow and steady.

May 27, 2015 at 11:25 AM

Dear Paul,

I guess you are kind of busy this morning. Some other list of items just arrived in my email to source for.

I will get them across to you in a bit

Martha

Let’s ignore this one for the moment.

May 27, 2015 at 3:04 PM

Hi Martha,

Oh, yes, I opened my bank account in the city. Their address is 260 Queen Street, Brisbane - tho that seems a bit far for you to visit from ye olde England? My night was fine after I finished cleaning up my boys vomit. You know how kids can be, right!

Sorry for the late reply, I've been driving my boys all over the country, sometimes I wish I could offload them to someone else, permanently, ha! We're still at a friends place, we're staying over night, since they are way out in Lance's Arse. I won't have access to my own computer until some time tomorrow, I can send you a photo then if you like! I'm 47, I hope you like the older gentlemen ;0)

Cheers,

Paul

May 27, 2015 at 7:37 PM

Hi Paul,

Thank you once again for your response. I believe we can both work together for a very long time because you seems friendly and matured.I believe you have so much experience in what you are doing. Of course I like you being an older gentlemen lol.

When do you want me to send the rest of the lists?

I have forward the bank account details to the sponsors and immediately they send any funds they will send me the receipt and let me know when the funds would be available in your account,i can then contact you to let you know the date the money will reflect inside your bank account.

I await your next responds.

Martha

Still on those lists. I guess we can’t have play without work.

May 28, 2015 at 7:34 AM

Hi Martha,

I do many things long time, it's how I got to where I am today! Please send the lists when you can. I've had to take another paid job in the meantime, as until you pay me, I still have to feed my 9 kids. Once the money comes through tho, I will be 110% yours, I guarantee!

I've also attached a photo of myself for your enjoyables.

Faithfully Yours,

Paul

Time to get more ridiculous. Paul is a hot, bearded lumberjack! (I think his resume said he was an engineer or something). I wonder if Martha has been keeping track of how many kids Paul has?

May 28, 2015 at 7:49 AM

May 28, 2015 at 5:28 PM

Thanks Martha! Sadly, my wife is no longer with us, as she passed away not long after our Russian bride-to-be disappeared. It's just me and the boys now :(

I will do my best with these new items, I'm sure my new friend Hugh Johnson at Toy's 'r' Us will help me out again :) They'll be closed now, but I will give him a call tomorrow.

I don’t know how this cheating with a scammer thing works in real life, maybe it’s better if I do have a wife? Too late now.

May 28, 2015 at 8:31 PM

Dear Paul,

I am sorry to hear about your wife. You are a good and friendly man and i believe you can also find a good woman who can make you happy again unless you like being single.

Please, you can take other paid job for the time being till the money comes into your account and after that you can deduct your weekly salary as I have passed your account on to one of the sponsors and I am waiting for the payment confirmation and the date it will reflect in your account.

Let me know when you have the second list ready.

I will like to know more about you as time goes on.

Regards,

Martha

May 29, 2015 at 6:27 PM

Good evening Paul,

How was your day? I am waiting to hearing back from you but I don't know why you have kept silence. This is so unusual of you.

I hope to hearing back from you.

Kind regards,

Martha

May 30, 2015 at 7:37 AM

Dear Paul,

What is going on?

This double life thing is hard. I don’t know how spies keep it up for so long. Better say something.

May 30, 2015 at 10:22 AM

Hi Martha,

Apologies for the silence. It was not by choice. We have a company here, they go by many names, most of them are not nice. Officially they are called Telstra. The job of that company is to destroy the internet in Australia. So we regularly have outages. Once we had no internet for 3 weeks, can you believe it?! I heard that even in third world countries they have better internet than here!

I'm not the sort of person who disappears without a trace, as I know how hurtful that can be. So, rest assured, if I disappear sometimes, it will most likely be because of the internet. Or the children. Or both. My new job is also taking up some time, but as you know, I'll be leaving that as soon as the funds come in, as then I'll be able to work solely for you Martha.

The way they treat me at this new job, it's ... it's not great. So I'm really looking forward to working with just you Martha. Here's the latest pricing from Hugh.

He said they don't stock some of these things, but he knows people around the shopping mall who does. Unfortunately he said that if we don't actually buy something from him soon, he doesn't know how much longer he can help out.

Attachment: Spreadsheet of random prices.

Deepeningly Yours,

Paul

Telstra, The Great Australian Scapegoat. Throw in some more hardship, come on Martha, Paul is ripe for the picking.

May 30, 2015 at 12:37 PM

Dear Paul,

This is a short note to let you know I am overwhelmed with joy to read back from you. I know you are a man of honour,a matured minded man, hard working and courageous. I was not worried because you disappeared, but i was worried because it's so unusual of you to go silent for such a long time,so i am personally worried about you.

I will write you more in few hours as I went to Vigil and just coming home.

Enjoy your day!

Martha

May 30, 2015 at 9:51 PM

Hello Paul,

How was your day? You wouldn't believe I am just waking up because I went for night Vigil and I came back around 4am England time.

Well,I am sorry you are having an internet issue but that shouldn't be happening in Australia and such company should be sued.

I will be more than happy to have you all to myself so you can work for only me but that would be when the money has entered into your account.I know you have a lot of things to get done financially at the moment which makes me understand you have no other choice but go for a temp. job.

I have called the sponsor earlier and he's letting me understand he will get back to me by Monday for me to know the status of the money he's sending and the total amount he will be sending first. The entire money might not come at once but one after the other,so i will update you on Monday and let you know our plans,Paul!

You are a good man and I am happy to have met you and I am looking to our meeting in person pretty soon.

I hope you enjoy your night

Martha.

June 1, 2015 at 8:18 AM

Good morning Paul,

How was your night? I am waiting to hearing from you

Martha

June 1, 2015 at 8:11 PM

Hello Paul,

Where are you?

Martha

Is Martha falling for Paul?

June 1, 2015 at 8:36 PM

Dearest Martha,

My temp job is paying me handsomely, but the hours they demand are extremely tiring. I walked in the door last night and collapsed, waking up in the overalls I wore to work! Luckily I only wash my sheets once every couple months, so I won't notice the new grease stains. My wife used to wash the sheets, I don't know how she did it so often!

But hey, at least the wages more than cover babysitting costs! How was your vigil? What is a night vigil? We don't have those here in Australia. We do have hoop snakes tho. Is it like a hoop snake? Nah, I'm just pokin' yer tittie for a a little laugh laugh. I know vigil's look more like monkeys.

It is Monday night here now, did you receive a response from your sponsor?

Delirious Paul

Paul starts slipping.

June 1, 2015 at 8:38 PM

No worries. You just heard from me!

Paul randomly responds to the previous emails.

June 1, 2015 at 8:40 PM

I'm here! No, I'm over here now! Wait for ... now I'm here!

Do you have another photo Martha? I like looking at your other one, but everyone knows 2 is better than 1.

Virilous Paul

June 1, 2015 at 8:48 PM

lol silly man! I am happy to read back from you.You know I always miss your sense of humour. I will hear from the sponsor today and I will send you a photo in few

June 1, 2015 at 8:52 PM

Hello Again Paul,

There is another photo of me and I hope you do like it. I wish I can see more of yours as well.

I am not disputing that fact that you need to commit yourself to other jobs to earn you a living for the time being. Infact,I am glad to hear that because it shows how hard working you are. I really like you,Paul.I just want you to understand immediately the money come into your account you will start being active with me. I am sorry for the delay but there is nothing I can do if the sponsor didn't pay for the items and some other funds needed by the children but I will surely get an update today I promise which would be tomorrow your time.

Martha

I can’t even tell if that’s the same person. How can Paul possibly live up to that?

June 3, 2015 at 8:31 AM

Paul,

I have not heard from you. How are you doing?

Martha

It took a day and a half for Martha to get worried. She obviously doesn’t care for Paul as much as she used to.

Hello Paul,

I am worried as to what is going on as i never heard from you. Ever since i sent you another picture you never sent me an email or explained to me what the delay could be. This is a short note to let you know the sponsor has sent some money into your account and the will send me the invoice today to confirm the amount they paid in there and the availability date,so I will get back to you with that. Please, wherever you might be I need your urgent response

Martha

Paul, unable to contain himself at the behest of an urgent response required, responds.

Dearest Martha,

I was left speechless after you sent me the last photo. My workmates have been asking for days what was going on. But don't worry, nothing bad, quite the opposite in fact!

Did your sponsors put money into the account today? Because I have just checked online and there is nothing there. If it was today, it will usually take overnight to appear.

Breathlessly Yours,

Paul Man

About those bank details earlier. On the next to no chance the scammers were ever going to deposit money, they were for Salvation Army donations.

Haha, Spartacas? I'll take that as a complimenet :) Lashes? Is that punishment or pleasure? Do you have a husband Martha? You must have a husband!

I have been very busy with my other job, it is such long hours, and I do like to spend time with my boys, even if I complain a little. I just get so exahuasted at the end of it. I can't wait to quit once we get started!

Tell me something about yourself Martha, I'm very interested to get to know you better.

That sounds lovely Martha,

I too enjoy the beach, but my home is far from the beach. Are you near any beaches?

Hi Martha,

I've been checking each morning before running out the door to work. I'm far too excited with anticipation. However, I do understand that you said it might be a few days, and it is now the weekend. It is actually a long weekend, as there is a public holiday on Monday.

Sadly, most Australians are extremely lazy, unlike myself. Nothing ever gets done in Australia on weekends, public holidays, beer night, after 4PM weekdays or before their 10AM shitter break.

Dear Paul,

How are you and your boy? How is your weekend going? I know it's late there I am still waiting on the sponsor but if they don't turn out to send the fund by Tuesday I will find a way of paying your first week salary of $500.

I hope you have an awesome night

Martha

Hello Paul

Paul finally snaps after 2 ½ weeks. The tonne of bricks fall.

I'm tired Martha. I'm tired of the lies and the deceit. What could possibly possess someone to pretend to be what they are not to such elaborate extents? What is in it for them? Why is my life filled with such untrustworthy people, Martha?

My workmates, they are the scum of the earth. They have been telling my boss all nature of things untrue. And to my face, they have the gall to tell me that you are lying. I tell them of you, Martha, every day. I tell them of a time when they can kiss my hole goodbye as I walk out that door. I was hoping it would be soon. Pleading with the gods it would be soon.

I still have not seen anything come through to the account, and you have not mentioned anything of your sponsor's receipt. Please tell me Martha the lies they tell aren't true. I am at my wits end. If another part of my life turns out to be false, I don't know what I will do next.

Dear Martha,

I've been checking my email as frequently as I can, yet I still have no response from you. Are you OK? I hope nothing untoward has happened to your kind and caring soul.

Thoughts of you are the only thing keeping me sane at work. The backstabbing and lies continue. I feel a darkness has befallen me, and you are the only light I can see.

I have this great sense of deja vu. You haven't spoken to me in days, and the feelings of loss I had from my Russian bride-to-be are resurfacing. Please let me know if you are OK.

Lost,

Paul

Paul lost another internet mistress. Heart shattered, head hung low, he walks off into the sunset. Yet, what he will never know are the lives he changed by forever removing that email address from the job boards.
